There is no better time in history to start a new business. Why? Because the competitive field has been greatly reduced and the power of technology greatly levels the playing field between you and the big guys. Because everyone is looking for a higher quality, lower cost alternative to their existing sources for goods and services. And because many of your potential clients have seen their old sources go under while trying to stay afloat.
If that's not enough incentive how about because you've figured out by now that you probably won't be able to retire on that employer sponsored plan you felt so good about just a few years ago. A sign that it's time to take control of your economic future. If you were recently laid off realize that you may be able to provide the same services that your former employer provided much faster and at a greatly reduced price. Get creative. What do people need, or want? What do they wish wasn't so expensive?
If you are not sure where to begin start at www.business.gov . You'll save time, energy and frustration wondering where to go for direction, or what your next step should be. The best part is that it's sponsored by your uncle Sam meaning it's paid for with your tax dollars. Don't feel like you're getting something for free you've already paid for it so don't hesitate to use it.
Lastly the only way to be sure that the economic bus you're on is headed in the right direction is for you to be driving that bus. Being your own boss is the best way to ensure that you will end up at the destination you chose when you began your trip.
